Question
When using PTV products for toll cost or currency calculations, you want to understand how exchange rates are managed: where the rates come from, how current they are, and how often they are refreshed. This is relevant when comparing PTV-calculated toll amounts against external references or when reconciling costs across currencies.
Answer
The exchange rate mechanism differs by product generation.
xServer 2 and PTV Developer use exchange rates sourced from an online provider. Rates are updated on a daily basis.
Legacy xServer 1 / MapServer products use exchange rates stored in a static INI file, which is updated approximately twice per year (as part of scheduled data releases).
The exact name of the external rate provider used by xServer 2 and PTV Developer is not publicly disclosed.
Additions hints
- Because xServer 2 and PTV Developer rates are updated daily, small variations in calculated toll amounts between consecutive days are possible and expected — they reflect genuine exchange rate movements, not data errors.
- Legacy xServer 1 / MapServer rates can be significantly out of date between updates. If currency accuracy is critical for a legacy deployment, this is a known limitation to account for when validating results against live market rates or third-party toll calculators.
- Toll amounts returned by PTV products are always excluding VAT/tax, regardless of currency or country. Apply the applicable national VAT rate when comparing to invoiced or calculator-displayed gross amounts (see related article on Hungarian HU-GO toll validation).
